1) If you have a damper or air controls, make sure they are fully open when lighting the fire and wait until the temperature is above 150C before closing them ( if necessary ).
2) check the moisture content of your wood with a moisture meter. Make sure you are burning seasoned wood.
3) check your last sweep certificate says that the chimney is safe to use.
4) make a note of the weather conditions, is it particularly windy or foggy or below freezing? If so wait until the weather improves.
5) can you see creosote debris or small twigs in the fireplace/ grate? If so book a chimney sweep and get a cowling fitted.
