When you have had a surround fitted there can often be a section of wall showing on the inside of the surround.

This can sometimes look odd if the wall on the outside of the surround is matching.

One solution is to fit stone panels over the gap but inside the surround and often looks stunning.

Usually the same material as the hearth is used for this, so granite or slate.
