If you have an open fire it is most likely to be parging which is the old dry cement that used to line the chimney originally. This does not indicate anything is wrong structurally and happens a lot. The parging will land in your fireplace ready to swept away.

If your chimney flue is properly lined by a HETAS installer then any falling debris is safely contained within the flexible liner or clay liner blocks. It will be sooty/ crystalised tar and will be landing on the top of the throat plate of the stove, ready to be re-burnt. This is fairly normal and nothing to worry about unless it happens a lot, in which case could indicate that you are burning the fuels too low and not achieving full combustion.

A stove thermometer would help with this (if you don’t already have one).

Crystalised Tar / Creosote from Chimney

If there isn't a liner there then the debris would fall on the register plate, along with other debris waiting for a spark to set it alight again. This could cause a chimney fire which could set fire to your house.

This is why it is important to have your chimney sweep check that your woodburner or multifuel stove has a physical connection from the appliance to the top of the chimney. If it hasn't then give us a call if you are local and we can quote for fixing the problem.

If the chimney isn't swept often enough and / or the fuel being burnt isn't seasoned properly, the tar and soot can build up and completely block a liner as in the photo above.

A blocked liner will reduce the draw of the stove and it will not burn as well as it used to, lots of smoke my also come back into room when the door is open.

This is likely to contain carbon monoxide and thus should set off the alarm.

Other Debris

Another cause of debris is a degrading chimney stack so if you are getting a lot of cement or bricks in your fireplace, then its worth taking a look at the stack when the fire is on to check that the smoke is only exiting via the chimney (and cowl). If you can see it coming out of other parts of the chimney stack, e.g. holes in the brickwork, then it's time for some maintenance before things get any worse (and expensive).

... but we do aim to buy quality goods and parts that will last.

We sometimes get asked whether we can lower the price on our quote, and there will always be another company who can do it cheaper than us.
We take pride in our work and our existing customers will vouch for that.
They are the ones that have recommended us to friends and family, and some have returned after moving house to have a second or third installation!

Find out what our customers say about us.

What we ask our customers to think about is how long the parts on the cheaper quote will last.
You may be able to save money now and not have to wait any longer for your lovely new logburner but if your liner degrades faster because it has not been tested at realistic temperatures, or if you have been sold a liner suitable for wood or gas and you intend to burn coal, then you could find that you are having to replace it within 3 to 5 years.

You could save money on the cowling and buy mild steel instead of stainless, but again, once open to the elements and soot, this kind of steel will soon need replacing. The cowl is usually how the liner is held securely in place, so once the cowl deteriorates, the fixings could release the liner so that it drops and gets damaged along the way. A damaged cowl could allow birds and vermin to nest in your flue (they like it warm) and this could pose a serious health risk if the fumes can’t escape properly.

That’s why we use HETAS approved flexible liner and associated parts which come with a life expectancy of around 20 – 35 years.
We also won’t recommend 316/316 liner if we think you are likely to burn smokeless fuel and we always give customers a free stove pipe thermometer when purchasing a stove through us.

With the banning of regular house coal in May 2021 customers are now forced to burn smokeless coal on their multifuel stoves, much of which contains acidic particles ( that create acidic rain ) that can eat through a 316/316 liner in a matter of years.

You could save money by excavating the opening yourself and ordering and fitting the hearth before we come.
When doing this remember to arrange for your free survey when your work is complete, otherwise we will need to revisit to check what you have done.
It could be a false economy however, as if the opening is not large enough or is unsafe, we will then have to delay your installation possibly by weeks, as our calendar will only have allowed for the one visit, and more may be needed to correct the work, which will certainly incur more labour costs.

The same goes for the hearth. If it is not the correct size, thickness or material as required by building regulations, we will not be able to continue until a new hearth is fitted and we would still have to charge for the wasted day.
This is why we charge for an inspection visit to make sure that you are ready to go ahead.

Also, think about whether you want to use a company that is not registered with HETAS or do it yourself.
If you do this you will have to liaise with building control to obtain planning permission beforehand and to have the installation checked when complete. You will be using people who have not been through the HETAS training and inspection process and have no guarantee that they will leave you with a safe installation. They also may not be around in a few months time to correct any problems you may have, or faults with the parts of appliance or installation.

The same is true of any installation company so choosing a firm registered at Companies House who are VAT registered with a minimum of £2 million in public liability insurance, and who have over 20 years experience, has got to put your mind at ease. Book a quote visit today.

Iron takes a long time to heat up and conversely a long time to cool down, so releases the heat into your room slowly. Steel is the opposite, so burners with both iron and steel are a popular combination. Most have a viewing window made of ceramic glass in the door(s) and insulating firebricks made of vermiculite board on the inside. They are usually sprayed with heatproof paint and sometimes enamelled.

Log burners are made around the world to varying different standards. Excavation / Preparation

The chimney opening which is sometimes known as the firebox, or builders opening, is the recessed area underneath the chimney flue. It is the inside of the chimney stack, where the fire basket usually lives. This is where your wood burner will be installed unless you are having a twin-walled system in a room without a chimney breast. If your firebox has been bricked up or boarded over, or you are removing a fireplace and don't know what's behind it, then it will need to be excavated as the first part of your wood burner installation. This is the messiest part of the installation and we will cover the floor and furniture and run the vacuum cleaner whilst working in order to minimise the dust and mess. It might be a little noisy however.

Sustainable option : Re-purpose the rubble for your next building project or we can take this away for you to be recycled. If you removed an old fireplace, renovate the fireplace and sell on Ebay or to a reclamation yard.

Protecting The Floor

You will need a hearth which is the part of the fireplace underneath the stove and directly in front of it. It's purpose is to catch any hot debris that may fall out of the wood burner, thus protecting any flooring or carpet and potentially stop a house fire.

In traditional fireplaces the hearth will be in two pieces. One to fit in the recess under the stove and a larger one that protrudes into the room. Your hearth will be made bespokely to order, and will be ready for your second visit ( if required ). T-shaped hearths are not recommended due to the stress on the material caused by the weight of the woodburner at high temperatures.

A hearth is required by law unless the surface that the stove is sitting on already meets building regulations hearth requirements. Suitable materials for hearths are granite, slate, stone, glass and precast concrete.

Sustainable option : Re-purpose some garden slabs for a rustic look or use an old granite worktop from the kitchen and use a stonemason to cut to size. Get ready for installation

Before fitting the burner, you need to think about how you will finish off the firebox chamber. If the brick work looks good once uncovered then it can be left for a rustic look. It could also be rendered (ready for painting), heat-proof tiles fitted, boarded with fireproof board or a 'fake' brick or slate chamber or board could be fitted. Take a look at our other services page for examples of these.

The chamber will need to dry after being rendered before it is ready to be painted with a watered down paint to match the room. The walls at the sides can be finished in the same way, or covered by slips (see below). Drying or curing can take one day to a week, depending on the time of year and room temperature. The main options are bare bricks, render, brick boards, vermiculite boards, Vlaze heat shields and tiles.

Sustainable option : Use the original brickwork or ask for lime render to be used, this is classed as a Carbon-Neutral product as it absorbs Carbon Dioxide in the drying process.
